Charity provides comfort to Hospicecare patients

Patients with life-limiting conditions will soon receive some extra comfort courtesy of a Weston-super-Mare-based charitable trust.

Weston Hospicecare supports people with a wide range of illnesses in addition to cancer, such as Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, Huntingdon’s Disease and other neurological conditions.

Some of these patients need to have specific postural support, and they have received a huge helping hand from the Axentis Michael Charitable Trust, which is paying for the provision of a Sorrento Chair.

The chair is made by Seating Matters, a firm which designs and manufactures specialised seating to improve the comfort and quality of life for those with postural and pressure management needs.

The chair is also on wheels, and will be easy for Hospicecare staff to move, which means patients will be more able to take part in activities and mealtimes with others in the day hospice.

The chair can also be used in a bedroom. It will enable Weston Hospicecare to improve patients’ experience of the day hospice and In-Patient unit, and ensures that the organisation can provide a higher standard of care.

John Bailey, Director of Patient Care at Weston Hospicecare, said: “We can’t thank the Axentis Michael Trust enough for this donation, and all their support for us. Without this wonderful donation, we would not be able to purchase this specialist chair, which really will make an enormous difference to our patients, and will ensure that we can provide the best quality care to those who have neurological and other conditions, and help them get the most out of life.”

The Axentis Michael Charitable Trust which started life as a small charity memorial to remember and honour the life of local hotelier Axentis Michael, who died in 2003.

The Trust raises and distributes funds to worthy causes in the surrounding area. The Trust made a significant contribution to an appeal which was launched in May 2016 to enable a six-year-old girl with cerebral palsy to undergo a procedure which would enable her to walk for the very first time.

Gracie had her operation, which is not available on the NHS, in Bristol, and the fund-raising appeal launched by her family will also cover the costs of at least two years of physiotherapy.

Kerry Michael, from the Axentis Michael Charitable Trust, said: “We are only too pleased to be able to provide some support to Weston Hospicecare, which is an extremely worthy cause. Weston Hospicecare is very well known locally for the wonderful work it does, and it is very satisfying for the Trust to know that our support will help that work and, more importantly, will help improve the quality of life for the people that Weston Hospicecare looks after.”
