Jeff Banks signs up as Auctioneer at Memorial Ball

Fashion designer Jeff Banks is the first of this year’s celebrities to have signed up to attend the Axentis Michael Memorial Ball, which will take place on the Grand Pier on Saturday 22nd November.

Jeff Banks CBE, who created and presented The Clothes Show, will act as the auctioneer during the evening.

Born in Ebbw Vale, Jeff co-founded the fashion chain Warehouse in the late 1970’s. His standing as a commercial force in retail fashion led to him presenting over 320 episodes of the Clothes Show on BBC1. The programme regularly pulled in 10 million viewers.

The sixth Axentis Michael Memorial Ball will take place in the Great Hall of the Grand Pier. The Snow Ball themed event is expected to be attended by over 700 guests.

The Axentis Michael Memorial Ball raises money for local good causes and has raised £750,000 to date. Organisers hope the proceeds from this year’s event will see them break the one million pound barrier. The Ball, which was started in 2004, is held every two years in memory of Weston-super-Mare hotelier Axentis Michael who passed away in 2003. Following his death the family set up the ball and the charitable trust.

Axentis’ son and Grand Pier owner Kerry Michael said: “I am absolutely delighted that Jeff has agreed to come along to the Ball and to act as our auctioneer on the evening. Not only will we have some fabulous items to bid for, but I’m sure Jeff’s skills as an auctioneer will maximise their value.

“Over the last eight years we have raised and distributed over three quarters of a million pounds. In the last two years we have been able to support a wide variety of local good causes, including buying a Permobil Koala chair for four year old Jay Browse, who has Congenital Muscular Dystrophy. This has now enabled him to attend mainstream school and to play out with his friends and siblings, things he couldn’t do previously”.

“Tickets are always in great demand so this year we have extended the capacity to 700 seats and hopefully this will enable us to reach our target. It is always a very popular event with people travelling from all over the UK and abroad to attend. Previous events have been well supported by celebrity guests including John Cleese, Theo Paphitis, Deborah Meaden and Chris Eubank.

Preparations are well underway for this year’s event and support so far has been fantastic. Organisers acknowledge the generosity of all of the friends and suppliers”.

Tables sea ten guests and are available to book now priced from 850 for a table of ten. Sponsors tables have already sold out. For further information email memorialball@grandpier.co.uk or call 01934 646155.
